Lake Elsinore resident fatally shot a man who was trying to break into his home Sunday night, authorities said.

About 10:45 p.m., a woman called 911 to report a burglary in progress, Riverside County sheriff’s officials said in a news release. The woman said a man was trying to force his way into their home in the 100 block of South Torn Ranch Road and that her husband had armed himself with a handgun.

Sheriff’s officials said the husband, who is in his 40s, warned the man that he was armed and would shoot if he continued. The intruder did not heed the resident’s warning, breaking a window, and the homeowner opened fire, according to sheriff’s officials.

The man was taken by ambulance to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Coroner's officials have not disclosed the man's name.

Sheriff's officials also have not released the name of the man who shot him.

Sheriff’s officials said there is no known connection between the intruder and the residents. Sgt. Mike Manning said the intruder threatened the family and demanded to be let inside. He said the intruder was not armed.

“The Sheriff’s Department is not seeking charges against the homeowner at this time,” Manning said in the release.

The sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit is investigating the shooting. Once completed, the case will be submitted to the Riverside County district attorney’s office for review.

This is the second time in as many years that a Lake Elsinore-area resident has fatally shot an intruder. In October 2012, a 72-year-old Lakeland Village resident fired a single, fatal shot at a man he said had pushed a window air conditioner inside his house and was peering inside holding a flashlight. The homeowner said he opened fire after the man -- later identified as a 51-year-old Lake Elsinore resident -- ignored his command to go away. Authorities ruled that the shooting was justified and the homeowner was not charged with a crime.
