Palatine police said Noah I. Perlman, 33, of the 100 block of West Wood Street, has been burglarizing units in the same complex where he lives.

He was charged with residential burglary, felony possession of stolen property valued at over $10,000, forgery of a stolen check, and possession of a controlled substance.

Police responded to a 9-1-1 call at 10:47 a.m. Thursday for a burglary in progress.

The 34-year-old resident told police she noticed damage to her front door when she arrived home and then found Perlman in her bedroom, police said.

When she saw he had a hammer and large screwdriver, she retrieved a handgun and confronted him, police said.

She told police that, fearing for her life, she fired at Perlman but missed. Then she held him at gunpoint until police arrived.

Police obtained a search warrant for Perlman's unit and recovered stolen property from a burglary in the same building last month, according to a news release. In addition, police said they found property stolen from two basement storage lockers over the past couple of months.

All of the previously reported thefts occurred after Perlman moved into the building approximately three months ago, police said.

Among the recovered items were various pieces of electronic and computer equipment, an electric guitar and amplifier, a Yamaha keyboard, and speakers, according to the news release. A stolen personal check with Perlman's signature on it was also found in his unit, police said.

Perlman will be taken to the Maywood courthouse Saturday for a bond hearing, police said.
