Sheriff Joe Arpaio calls on 250,000 armed citizens to respond to terror, mass shooters

Sheriff Joe calls for legally armed citizens to act

Arizona’s outspoken Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is calling for an armed citizenry to deter acts of terror such as the one that occurred in San Bernardino, California, that left 14 dead, and many more injured.

Following that tragedy, Arpaio tweeted:

“This year, with all the terrorism going on — they’re shooting up schools, churches, you name it — now with the international problem we have [in Paris, Mali],” he told local NBC affiliate Channel 12 News.

“So why not bring in those 250,000 citizens that we know of that carry concealed weapons. And if they’re on the scene of a rampage, take some action.”

He emphasized because law enforcement officers can’t be everywhere at once, armed citizens should be available to step in and save lives in the process.

“In Colorado you had a guy there for five hours,” he said of the Planned Parenthood shooting. “If you had someone there with a concealed weapon that guy would have been taken down.”

Arpaio isn’t the only law enforcement official who has called for an armed citizenry.

Detroit Chief of Police James Craig, commenting recently on terrorist attacks in Mali and Paris remarked that an unarmed populace is exactly what the bad guys want.

“A lot of Detroiters have CPLs (concealed pistol licenses), and the same rules apply to terrorists as they do to some gun-toting thug,” Craig said. “If you’re a terrorist, or a carjacker, you want unarmed citizens.”

Even the police chief of Washington, D,C., which has notoriously strict gun laws, admitted on a recent edition of CBS’s “60 Minutes” that taking the perpetrator out is often the best option.

“If you’re in a position to try and take the gunman down, to take the gunman out, it’s the best option for saving lives before police can get there,” Chief Cathy Lanier told interviewer Anderson Cooper.

Arpaio discussed the importance of an armed citizenry with NBC 12 News. You can watch the interview below.
